Nothing was more obvious as to how much of a business yoga is, than at this year’s Om Yoga Show in London. It tied in with the Mind, Body, Soul Show, buy one ticket and go to both exhibitions. It felt like one enormous, never-ending circus, everyone vying for your attention and selling their soul.

Every possible item you can imagine is for sale from the obvious such as mats, clothes to the less obvious shamanic witchcraft and food dice. (Which literally is what it says: a set of dice with food names on it)

What do you think of when you hear the words ‘yoga retreat’? Do you imagine burnished blue skies, delicious vegetarian spreads and relaxed yoga sessions with a bunch of like-minded people? Or something more austere with intensive yoga sessions, time for silent contemplation and some proper headspace? Nestled in the rolling Andalucian hills just outside of Seville is a little drop of bliss called Suryalila.

About an hour’s drive from the city, it’s fairly accessible via various methods of transport. We chose to get a transfer organised by the retreat. Just before we turn off to take the bumpy dirt road that leads to the retreat, our transfer vehicle is ground to a halt by a massive flock of sheep, valiantly accompanied by their shepherd and dedicated sheep dog.
