Back in lockdown 1.0, we all threw ourselves enthusiastically into our hour of exercise a day. We tuned in to Joe Wickes, we bought bikes, scooters and trampolines in record numbers. And of course, threw ourselves into the plethora of online yoga classes out there.

This time around the mood is slightly less enthusiastic. We know why we’re doing this – Covid has not gone away – but it feels harder. We’re tired, stressed and there’s only so much Zoom a person can take.

How to Cosy Up for Autumn

Well, 2020 has been quite the year, but one thing that we haven’t had to complain about this year is the weather. We probably tried – we’re British after all – but it would have been unfounded because the sun has shone and shone and shone and shone.

But the forecast this week says that the golden, late-summer warmth is set to be replaced with a distinctly chillier temperature. And the pandemic forecast is similarly gloomy, with case numbers rising and restrictions tightening.

So, how can we prepare for Autumn and make sure that we look after ourselves as we head into what looks like a second wave?

Hibernating mammals have got it worked out. Once the golden leaves of Autumn have fallen, they then spend the winter curled up in their cosy cave, re-emerging only when the green shoots of Spring unfurl. Migratory birds do the other sensible thing and migrate to warmer climes – like the swallows to Africa.

What do humans do? Well, the richer ones migrate too, spending six months of the year in their apartment in the South of France. But most of us resort to our usual response, which is to carry on as blooming normal and moan about it. (more…)

It’s easy to feel SAD at this time of year. And no, I don’t mean actually sad (boohoo), but the mental health condition, Seasonal Affective Disorder. According to the mental health charity MIND, the reasons for why people suffer from SAD during the autumn and winter months is unclear, but a combination of the effects of reduced light levels, a disrupted body clock, low serotonin levels, and high melatonin levels, could all be triggers that set off this condition.

Living in a temperate climate like our own, we can relish the changes of the seasons, and the contrasts that each one brings. For most of us, Christmas means sparkly lights, cosying up by the fire with family, and frosty walks in the low summer sunlight. For others who suffer from SAD, however, winter can be incredibly hard and lonely. SAD can cause serious symptoms, such as changing weight, appetite and sleeping patterns. All these can combine to have a detrimental effect on your physical, as well as your mental health. (more…)
